What is National Origin Discrimination

What is National Origin Discrimination

National origin discrimination occurs when an employer treats an employee or a job applicant inappropriately because of the area of the world or the country that the employee is from. National origin discrimination also includes discrimination based upon the employee’s accent, ethnicity, or because the employee appears to be of a certain ethnicity or background.

National Origin Discrimination in the Workplace

In Minnesota, it is illegal to discriminate against an employee because of their national origin or the employer’s perception of the employee’s national origin. Discrimination could include paying someone of a national origin differently than other employees, giving employees of certain national origins differing and less favorable job assignment, or firing, terminating, or demoting the employee because of their national origin.

Creating a hostile work environment based on the employee’s national origin is also considered a type of discrimination based on national origin.
